Ovahimba Kennels has produced a number of remarkable dogs over the years due to their intelligence and speed at which they take to training. We are very proud of all our babies.
Ovahimba Boahinmaa "Caddie"
Caddie has been trained by her owner Jo to be her Assistance/Service Dog, as Jo is confined to a wheelchair. Caddie's training has allowed Jo to live at home as Caddie can perform the everyday tasks that Jo needs assistance in. Caddie is remarkable because not only is she an assistance dog but she is also trained in obedience and agility, which in many ways is contradictory to her assistance dog role. But Caddie knows the difference between when she is 'on duty' wearing her assistance dog uniform and when she is at a trial.
Ovahimba Kennels on Burke's Backyard TV
A number of years ago, Liz and Kenny were watching Burke's Backyard when they saw a road test for the White German Shepherd. Liz and Kenny thought that maybe Don Burke would like to do a road test on the Black German Shepherd, so they sent an email off to the Burke's Backyard people and thought that nothing would come of it. Low and behold a few months later they received an invite to bring the dogs down to Sydney for an interview and taping for a segment on the show! So they bundled up a few of the dogs with help from the kids and a cousin, and invited any owners of Ovahimba babies in the Sydney area to come along.
Liz was interviewed by Don Burke and the segment was aired on TV. A Black German Shepherd breed profile can be found in The Complete Burke's Backyard book, and a fact sheet on the Burke's Backyard website.
Please watch the segment on the Burke's Backyard YouTube channel linked below!
We had a lot of enquiries about our Black German Shepherds after that TV segment aired, as many people were impressed with the beauty and intelligence of our babies. Many people were unaware that this full black colouration existed in German Shepherd Dogs and this TV segment sure helped spread the word!
